What is a pressure ulcer? A pressure ulcer is a localised injury to the skin and/or underlying tissue usually over a bony prominence, as a result of pressure, or pressure in combination with shear. (1) They most often develop on skin and tissue that covers boney areas of the body including the tailbone, hips, ankles, heels, shoulder blades, spine and back/ side of the head.
